Amrita Nanda a Young India Fellow 2014 attends the Global Social Business Summit 2013, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Amrita Nanda a Fellow at the Young India Fellowship (YIF) programme, class of 2014, was awarded a grant to attend the Global Social Business Summit 2013 from November 7-9 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Global Social Business Summit is a world wide leading forum for social business organised by the Grameen Creative Labs and Yunus Centre to spread awareness about social business and to foster discussions and collaborations for new social business ventures. The summit convened over 500 delegates from 40 countries. Amrita had the opportunity to interact with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Prof. Muhammad Yunus and Hans Reitz, the head of the summit and present her ideas on grassroots initiatives in India and in Haiti. She spoke about observing a paradigm shift in the business sector, which is becoming increasingly receptive to alternative solutions such as social businesses that generate revenue while emphasizing community development and engagement. She draws these learnings from the coursework at YIF and from her personal experiences at the Melton Foundation where she is a Senior Fellow. She considers two aspects of the summit as her biggest takeaways – being exposed to the existing ways to measure the impact of social businesses to identify best-in-class approaches, and networking with experts from private sectors, civil society, governments and academia.
