Akanksha Narain

I was always interested in how people and societies functioned - or failed - and this led me to pursuing a degree in journalism from Lady Shri Ram College. While there, some of my convictions were strengthened, while others had to be abandoned as a host of new ways to approach a story were presented to me. I furthered my interest in the subject by doing a postgraduation in conflict transformation and peace building, a subject that I believe is vital for our world today.

In my working life, though I started off as an analyst for Facebook, I am involved at present with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan.

If you ask me about my other great passion, it would be for Chess. The game has given me hours of challenges and pleasure – and has brought some recognition my way. In school, I was awarded ‘AOA’s Cash Award’ for excellence in Chess for nine consecutive years. In college, I was awarded College Colours for the same and also placed 1st in the Delhi University Chess (Girls) Tournament. I am also a National Scholarship holder for excellence in Chess.

If I look back to try and figure out my two major achievements in life, they would be linked with Chess as well. The first would be when I was the second runner- up in Chess at the National School Games in 2003, but the really unforgettable experience was represented my country at the World Youth Chess Festival.
